Photolog: Nanjing 1 (Old China, New China)

I thought this was the Drum Tower, but I learned it was another building, next door; on the roof, this ancient bell was cutely juxtaposed with a skyscraper-in-progress.

The staircase down from the top.

Wicker tyrannosaurs and a Tibetan doll. Beautifully freaky. I didn’t have room in my baggage for one, so I took a picture instead…

Entering a hillside park that overlooks the old city wall and a large lake… neither of which I managed to photograph, because my camera’s battery died. So the shots I managed to take in this park are experimental, and I didn’t manage to picture the major sights. I like them anyway. This one was taken by the attendant at the park entrance — as good a photo of me as any. I didn’t end up going up the stairs, but instead took some trails around the place.

A view from the park… the back of some outbuildings, concrete stairs going down, and in the distance, the city below.

I liked this little grotto near the main staircase.

More old and new…

I saw the pipes that must make this a waterfall in the busy season. In the chill of winter, algae had overgrown it. I like this photo; the buildings in the background contrast well with the scenery.

The translation they used for ‘organic waste’ delighted me….

Judging from the enthusiastic crowd inside, this train-station bakery doesn’t serve kaka.

I didn’t manage to even nearly capture the sleek modern wonder that’s the Nanjing subway system. Oh well; next time.

Near the bus station, an overpass takes pedestrians up and over and down a long stair, into a warren of narrow alleys where street food vendors and taxicab touts vie for customers… The tone and detail didn’t fully come through, and I had to edit a lot just for visibility. It’s a run-down area that reminds me of seedy parts of Oakland, with dizzying views of the city limits, and I wanted to take the shot even though I knew it wouldn’t come out.
